Sissy!
Performance de Nando Messias
Sissy! forms part of Nando’s practice-based PhD research on the issue of male effeminacy. It has been developed following the progress of a series of experiments carried out in and out of studio. Sissy! investigates the sometimes damaging effects of living a life as a hyper-visible queer subject. Based on the work developed by Quentin Crisp and Matt Houlbrook (among others), bodily markers of effeminacy have been isolated in order to examine current perceptions of the sissy body. The limp-wrist, the mincing gait, makeup and high-heeled shoes are therefore used to create choreography that engages with pressing concerns such as violence, segregation and ridicule – all still prevailing elements in the daily life of sissies.
This piece has been created in collaboration with Biño Sauitzvy.
